Cornwall Council has today issued the formal planning consent for the redevelopment of South Quay in Hayle.

The consent, which grants permission for the construction of a new supermarket, 30 homes, restaurant and a small retail unit on the derelict Quay itself and the construction of 3 retail units on part of the former Hayle foundry site, has been issued by the Council after the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government announced he was not calling in the application.

The consent includes a planning obligation which requires the applicant ING to complete repairs to Hayle’s historic harbour walls, re-open part of the historic Carnsew Dock and repair and re-instate the sluicing infrastructure to Carnsew Pool.

ING has also agreed to transfer buildings within its ownership to the Hayle Foundry Trust and, following further consultation, to transfer Hayle Harbour and related land to local management. ING will also establish a levy on the development it proposes at South Quay and on other development sites within its ownership which can be used to operate and maintain the Harbour into the future.

Local Cornwall Councillor John Pollard said “Another major step forward for Hayle!! I am grateful to Cornwall Council officers, ING managers and Hayle Town Councillors who have worked through the 106 process and delivered yet more good news for the town. The successful conclusion of these negotiations is a significant and very welcome stride towards the development of South Quay and the next stage of Hayle’s regeneration.’

“It’s time for everyone to get behind this scheme, and support this application for the benefit of Hayle” added Local Cornwall Councillor John Coombe “I would like to join my colleague John Pollard in thanking Council officers, Hayle Town Council and ING for all their hard work in helping to progress this scheme”.

Hayle Town Council’s Mayor John Bennett said “I am delighted that we have reached this exciting point in Hayle’s history and really look forward to the benefits that this project will bring to Hayle.”

ING are understood to be preparing detailed listed building applications for the repairs to the historic structures with a view to starting development on the site in late Autumn.
