A new hotel and community centre, improved water sports facilities, cinema and affordable homes are among proposals submitted to Cornwall’s planners to complete the transformation of Hayle Harbour into a vibrant new coastal quarter.

Corinthian Homes, which is leading the North Quay development in Hayle, has unveiled its vision for the next phase of regeneration which, it says, will deliver a raft of community benefits as well as establishing the scheme as a “nationally significant new residential, visitor, business and investment destination”.

A masterplan is already in place for the redevelopment of Hayle Harbour and work started earlier this year on phase one, which will feature 140 homes, new shops, restaurants and open spaces.

The detailed plans for the next phase of development submitted to Cornwall Council add much of the leisure and community infrastructure which will complete North Quay and include:

  • 377 new homes (including 93 affordable homes)
  • New hotel
  • Multifunction community hall on the beachfront
  • Cinema and art gallery at the heart of the harbour at East Quay, linked by a new pedestrian footbridge
  • Water sports centre
  • Package of waterside and harbour improvements including:
New quayside toilets and showers
Improved facilities for local fishermen
Wharf extension and dry berth facility
New workshops
Slipway improvements for local water sports clubs
Additional moorings

Simon Wright, CEO of Corinthian Homes Group, said: “Our clear aim is to deliver a project which greatly enhances the local area and its economy, brings benefits to the local community, protects and promotes its heritage and puts Hayle Harbour on the map as a desirable destination.

“At the heart of these proposal is a commitment to quality of design, support for local marine industries and water users, promoting a busy and successful working harbour and creating a bustling and lively waterside quarter which is open to the community and visitors year-round.”

Public access to the nearby beach will be maintained and there will also be new car parking facilities at North Quay, a variety of attractive and well-connected pedestrian-friendly streets and seating areas incorporated into key locations along the wharf.

More information will be available at www.north-quay.co.uk from the July 6 via a virtual exhibition where visitors can read about the plans and leave their feedback.
