A "DESOLATE" part of Hayle that had fallen into disrepair has now been reopened for public use as part of the £16 million North Quay infrastructure project.

On Thursday the new promenades on North Quay were opened, allowing locals and visitors to explore the harbour area in a way not previously possible.

The opening, which follows the completion of the new bridge over Copperhouse Pool last December, marks the end phase of the works, which started in February 2011 by Cornwall Council and contractors Carillion.

Cornwall councillor for Hayle North, John Pollard, said: "As a child I walked along this quay as my grandfather described the working boats and pointed out the machinery, trying to avoid the mess and coal dust, breathing in the pungent smell from the sulphur spilling onto the road. In recent times, apart from the fishermen, it became a desolate place, crumbling and pot-holed – decay everywhere."He concluded: "What a transformation – brilliant."

The infrastructure project will unlock development sites on North Quay, owned by harbour developers ING, which include new commercial and industrial workspace.
