Cornwall's NHS trust boss is leaving her post this summer as CEO of the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust.

Former nurse Kate Shields was appointed as chief executive of Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust (RCHT) in January 2019 having acted in the role after previous chief exec Kathy Byrne left.

She has worked at the Trust since 2017, when she was brought in after the Care Quality Commission (CQC) gave it an "inadequate" rating and placed it in special measures.

She had previously called the role "probably the best job in the world".

Now the mum-of-five has made the announcement that she will be resigning from her position in August this year but she will still be in Cornwall and working across the NHS.

She will be taking up a new role as NHS Kernow’s new chief executive and accountable officer, and the chief executive of the emerging Integrated Care System (ICS).

NHS Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group’s chairman, Dr Paul Cook, said: “We are very pleased to confirm that Kate Shields has been appointed. She will lead NHS Kernow as it transitions into the evolving ICS.”

It's as across the country the NHS, local authorities, and other partners, including the voluntary sector, are joining forces to create single integrated systems which will plan, fund and deliver all services needed by local people.

NHS England and NHS Improvement approved Cornwall and the Isles of a Scilly’s plan to become an ICS last December.
