STEVE West has taken up the reins to become the new chairman of Hayle RFC.

He takes over the role from Steve Benney who has been in the chair for the past eight years.

West, a presenter on Penwith Radio, has been involved with the club for five years.

His involvement started in a liaison role for the Hayle Runners, where he was a committee member.

He then joined the rugby club's management committee and last year was voted vice chairman.

He is also part of the physio team at the club as he is a trained sports massage therapist, specialising in injury management.

West said: "As you all know I am extremely honoured to have been voted as chairman of Hayle RFC and to accept the responsibilities that committee and club members has entitled me to.

"I shall try not only to match the hard work and achievements that our past chairman Steve Benney has injected into our club, but intend to work tirelessly, with the help of the committee to take our club into a new chapter.

"With the help also of players and members I intend to concentrate on all aspects of rugby development, to make Hayle RFC an enjoyable, social, and profitable club once again for future generations, especially encouraging youth rugby.

"At this very moment the club is re establishing a colts team."

Following the news this year that the Asda development plans had been turned down by the Strategic Planning Committee, Hayle's hopes of relocating will not be going ahead in the foreseeable future.

West added: "It is now time to take a new look at our club, in a new perspective.

"In this economic climate our club has challenging times to face.

"We need to have a positive attitude, not negative. We need to think about the future of or club and only reflect on the past, not live in it. We need to look ahead and not back."
