A classic musical with a huge history. Bizet's opera Carmen was adapted to a Second World War African-American setting by Hammerstein, and then filmed starring Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge - a role that made her the first black woman to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. A very daring film for the times, supported this year as part of the BFI's Black Star season.

As ever, at the Passmore Edwards Institute, house lights down at 7.30pm. Tickets £5/£4 for members, reserve on 01736 752319.
