Black ice warning issued as a cold weather alert hits

Published by Emma Carton at 7:29am 20th January 2020. (Updated at 7:50am 20th January 2020)

A black ice warning has been issued to drivers on day two of Cornwall's cold weather alert.

The Level Two alert will be in force until Tuesday evening, as temperatures plummet.

Overnight lows were forecast to fall to as low as -6C in some areas.

The gritters have been out across the Duchy and you can check the treated routes here.

Kernow Weather Team says conditions on untreated roads and pavements could be slippery.

"Another bitterly cold start for Monday with widespread frost and perhaps some fog for some.

"Please be advised of icy stretches first thing in the morning, particularly black ice on roads and pavements, that haven't been treated.

"We will again see another dry and gorgeous day with some long periods of sunshine.

"There will be a little more cloud around from time to time, but this won't spoil things.

"If you decide to go out and enjoy the weather, please wrap up warm.

"The winds will be from the East/Northeast, light around 2 - 8mph.

"Temperatures will struggle from 0C to 8C during the day. However add on a wind chill factor, it's likely to feel more like minus 2 to +4C.

"Temperatures will also range, depending on sunlight and colder in sheltered spots.

"Evening and overnight, staying dry but a bitterly cold one. Clear skies making temperatures fall rapidly with a widespread frost again and icy stretches.

"Night time temperatures could be as low as -4C, so please watch out for black ice".
