Cornwall areas with highest Covid-19 rates as new variant detected

Cornwall's most infected area has been revealed in the Government's latest Coronavirus data. The county saw 313 new cases in the week leading up to December 10 - a 41 per cent increase on the seven days before.

The Government has a coronavirus heat map, which measures the case rates across the country per 100,000. According to the latest data, Porthleven, Breage and Praa Sands has the highest Covid-19 infection rate in Cornwall.

The area confirmed 13 new cases in the week leading up to December 10 - an 85.7 per cent rise on the seven days prior. It currently has a case rate of 189.1 per 100,000 people.

 
 

Meanwhile, rates in Camborne East and Camborne West remain among the highest in the county. The former has a current rate of 159.8 per 100,000 while the figure for the latter is 157.7.

Helston saw an 88.9 per cent rise in infections, with 17 confirmed cases and a case rate of 138 per 100,000. In Mylor Bridge and Frogpool, cases surged by a whopping 300 per cent, giving the area a current rate of 128.7.

Here are the areas in Cornwall with the highest Covid rates according to the latest Government figures. The numbers represent data from the week leading up to December 10.

Porthleven, Breage and Praa Sands

  • 13 new cases - rise of 85.7 per cent.
  • Case rate of 189.1 per 100,000.

Camborne East

  • 14 new cases - rise of 366.7 per cent.
  • Case rate of 159.8 per 100,000.

Camborne West

  • 11 new cases - rise of 175 per cent.
  • Case rate of 157.7 per 100,000.

Helston

  • 17 new cases - rise of 88.9 per cent.
  • Case rate of 138 per 100,000.

Mylor Bridge and Frogpool

  • Eight new cases - rise of 300 per cent.
  • Case rate of 128.7 per 100,000.

The data comes amid the detection of a new Covid-19 subvariant in recent weeks. BF.7 has recently been identified as the main variant spreading in Beijing, and is contributing to a wider surge of Covid infections in China.

It has also been detected in other countries such as India, the US, the UK and several European countries such as Belgium, Germany, France and Denmark. The variant similar symptoms to those associated with other omicron subvariants, primarily upper respiratory symptoms such as a cough and sore throat.
