Rogue Theatre’s Winter Wood and Angarrack Christmas lights

Pat Smith reflects on two of her favourite festive activities in Cornwall – Rogue Theatre’s Winter Wood and the Angarrack Christmas lights.

Last year we spent a fabulous Boxing Day afternoon experiencing the enchantment of the faerie kingdom in Tehidy woods with Rogue Theatre and then meandering down to Angarrack village near Hayle to take in their special displays of Christmas lights.

Our family are big fans of Rogue Theatre and we regularly head down to Portreath to watch their shows. The Winter Wood is a favourite as it is usually dark and Angelina, Ollie and their bohemian company embellish the bare beauty of their special corner of the forest to create an enchanting, glittery, candlelit wonderland where children’s eyes are agog and everyone’s imagination runs riot as theatre is taken into the landscape.

Magical tales of times gone by or yet to come lie at the heart of their unique promenade performances. Winter Wood celebrates all things seasonal and festive while tapping into our appetite for mystery and surprise. You are led on a joyful journey guided through the trees by woodland spirits to Old Man Winter’s warm and welcoming theatre tent where you’ll fall under the spell of a seasoned storyteller who always has a new tale to share.

Winter Wood 2015 takes place from 11-30 December, so if you are holidaying at Bosinver over the festive period I wholeheartedly recommend you buy tickets for an experience you will never forget! Wrap up warm, take a torch and wear coats and wellies – it is warm inside the tent with hot chocolate and soup but you have a woodland walk beforehand – in the dark!

Angarrack is a small village close to Hayle on the Atlantic coast of North Cornwall. The whole village takes part in a memorable animated display of the 12 Days of Christmas. The illuminations are scattered through the village: there are lights on the roof tops, on the walls, and even in the river!

The Angarrack Christmas lights are switched on between 5pm – 10.30pm every day up to and including Twelfth Night (5 January) and are definitely worth a trip to see.

We thoroughly enjoyed wandering around the village, seeking out all 12 Days, feeling really Christmassy after our visit to Rogue Theatre in the afternoon. A glass of mulled wine in the Angarrack Inn warmed our cockles nicely. We’re set to repeat the whole experience again this year.
