B&K to start £12m Cornish waterfront scheme

Plans to restore Hayle waterfront in Cornwall will finally move forward with construction of an Asda store.

Bowmer & Kirkland has been signed up by developer ING to deliver the project, which also includes 30 homes, a waterfront restaurant and shops at the derelict South Quay site.

The development has been mired in controversy and earlier this year the United Nations World Heritage Committee urged the Government to block plans for a supermarket on derelict land in the estuary.

The Government ignored the call and now construction of a 50,000 sq ft Asda store will start within the next few weeks.

A spokesman for Asda said: “We are delighted to announce our plans to open a store in Hayle.”

The consent includes an obligation for the developer to complete repairs to Hayle’s historic harbour walls, reopen part of Carnsew Dock and repair the infrastructure to Carnsew Pool.
