Alison Hernandez told us that she is going to have a meeting with Mark Bolt and the Deputy Chief Constable who were there yesterday. She was very supportive of our campaign and we are waiting with baited breath for the outcome. She is going to discuss the petition (4061 we handed over), but it is also important for her to consider that since it was televised yesterday, more people are aware of what's happening and there has been a sharp increase in people signing and wanting to know more. It's already heading closer to 5000 now.
some smashing shots of Sharon Ciliberto, Maria Ellis and myself at the meeting with Alison Hernandez and the police yesterday
Watch this space the campaign is not going to stop! we're only just getting started!
Well, where do I begin? There was lots of support, particularly from Alison Hernandez and the public. The long and the short of it, according to the police chiefs who made the initial decision, is that Mike is best qualified to take on the roll of custody sergeant out of the police that they have got. The police chiefs told us that there are vulnerable offenders in custody with mental illness that need Mike's support. So I'm sorry but all you law-abiding vulnerable people out there, some of you with mental illnesses too do not qualify for Mike's support or protection. He is needed by the offenders. Derek Thomas is going to bring it up in the house of commons next week and Alison is going to meet with the police chiefs who were there today for further discussion. I urge you to complete the online survey by following this link. Alison is genuinely in agreement with us and wants to hear what the people want so that she can form the 4 year plan
http://www.devonandcornwall-pcc.gov.uk/…/police-and-crime-…/
In the mean time, we are not giving up. Watch this space!!!
It's a crime against public opinion, I am sure they just came to pay us some credence determined not to listen and thought a couple of blokes with string on their shoulders would make a few numptee women go away!
Well they are wrong and it's made us more determined than ever!!
Watch BBC tonight !!
We don't figure into the equation!
Inner city officers don't get to care for this amount of people!
We all live here off of the tourist trade, what happens when they no longer come here when crime rises
I don't see any amount of campaigning will change the minds of those already made up . They appear to have made their minds up and will not change because they will lose face . It will take a major event to show them the error of their decision .
PCCs have been elected by the public to hold Chief Constables and the force to account, effectively making the police answerable to the communities they serve.
I have asked again and again that if the PCC has no authority and has no influence even after the role outlined above is written into the responsibilities what is the remit? It appears to be solely political. Ms Alison Hernandez should either do something about our cause or state that she cannot, at least then we will understand the role better. The whole Police and Crime Plan Consultation is a complete side show. Can I suggest that either do your business or get off the potty!
Petitions are well over 4000 now and we have had a surge tonight!
About 6:30
Can't believe the surge that is happening tonight in signing petitions. Surely they have to listen!! Policing by consent!! Let us not forget!!
The public fund the police, not the 'human resources' department. Policing is by consent. The public obviously don't consent to assigning a man who is an ace as patrol seregant. Patrols are more importat than desks. Exercise the discretionary powers to do the right thing here please, as it is clearly in the public interest.

Keep sharing, this is happening in many communities all over the country!! We need to stop it!!!
Local police are needed.

This was posted on the online petition by Bob Wheeler i worked with mike for a few years at truro and after 31 years service in the police I can honestly say he was the best policeman I ever worked with.these 2 areas need a community sgt and a proactive one at that which mike was/is.he helps kids with problems [ sorry challenges as bosses would speak] so much for community policing .if he can help an handful of youngsters surely this can help them in the future and stay off crime ., and the force as well.
Listen from about 2:05 You will hear Alison Hernandez? backing us
To the Polish Community in Harlow, I wish there were community police to be able to quickly intercept. So sorry.
HUGE THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT hope to see you tomorrow at The Guildhall, St Ives

L&M cars have offered lifts to St Ives Guildhall on 1st Sept to the meeting with Devon & Cornwall police and crime commissioner to discuss a way forward with Sergeant Mike Friday. I will also have space for 4. Message Lee Robert Bryant if you need a lift with L& M cars. This is a very important meeting in this campaign and I strongly urge as many as possible to attend at 11 am.
Alison Hernandez has sent a PDF document saying she can't do anything about the situation but will be holding a public meeting in st Ives council on 1st September at 11am. Guess she's not going to be at Tescos now. I can message letter from my phone but can't attach it for you all to read as its pdf. As many as possible MUST attend this meeting. This is the beginning of the end. They are not listening to the taxpayers. They are not listening to what the man in the streets want or need!!!
Please make sure as many members as possible come and have your say about our community policing at St Ives Council rooms/ guildhall at 11am on 1st September. This is the beginning of the end of this campaign and we MUST let the senior officers know what we need. DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY. If anyone needs transport please let us know on here and I'm sure we can help, especially with the parking situation in St Ives being tricky.
I would love to be with you all. But I'm working. I have a market stall in Penzance Monday to Friday. I have seen less and less police on the streets of Penzance over the years. 101 is a joke. By the time I've got through, reported the incident. The fracas is all over.
I formally apologise to Alison Hernandez for misunderstanding her invitation to a meeting and her letter of response. At the time I thought she meant a personal meeting but it was a public meeting that she wanted to arrange. Even better. Trying to read things on the Scillies, in the brilliant sunshine, on a small iPhone screen with intermittent internet is not the easiest thing to manage. I can see that she is intending to get all parties together in an effort to move forward and we must thank her for that. Please accept my apologies Alison.
I write in response to your letter regarding planned changes to local policing arrangements in the St Ives and Hayle area and the redeployment of Sergeant Mike Friday. The strong level of support for Sergeant Friday is clear from the facebook and online petitions and the correspondence received by my office.
The decision to move Sergeant Friday is part of an operational policing decision to move from two sector Sergeants in Penzance sector to a single Sergeant. The Chief Constable and his senior command team are responsible for making decisions regarding the deployment of officers, not the Police and Crime Commissioner. I provide the funding and the strategic direction for the force. In general, the funding position has been protected for the next four years with some small reductions in the national government grant. I expect that my police and crime plan, which is currently out to consultation, will focus on the continued importance of local policing although there are always a range of new and emerging priorities that must also be balanced such as the online exploitation of children.
I do recognise the impact that changes like this can have on the public’s perception of policing and on how connected they feel to the police and I do understand that many people living in Hayle and St Ives are concerned about these changes. I am calling a public meeting in St Ives next Thursday to allow members of the public and local councillors to voice their concerns directly to me and to senior police officers within Devon and Cornwall Police.
That meeting will take place at 11:00 on 1st September 2016 and will be held in St. Ives at the Town Hall. The meeting will be in the Council Chamber.
I am fully committed to improving the links between the police and the community and this will be a core feature in my plan for the next four years. Visible local policing, including the work of the dedicated network of police officers and PCSOs working in neighbourhoods across the two counties is most definitely a part of that connection. I want to work with local communities over the coming months to make improvements locally recognising that what is right for one location may not work in another. I am currently consulting on my policing plan for the next four years – and people can get involved in that consultation through the OPCC website. http://www.devonandcornwall-pcc.gov.uk/…/police-and-crime-p… consultation/
I look forward to meeting with you on 1st September and working with you as we move forward.
Yours sincerely
Alison HernandezPolice and Crime Commissioner
Neighbourhood Policing in St Ives and Hayle
Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez will host a public meeting in St Ives next week at which she has invited senior police officers to explain planned changes to local policing arrangements in the St Ives and Hayle area, including the redeployment of Sergeant Mike Friday.
The meeting will be held at St Ives Town Hall at 11am on Thursday 1 September.
Ms Hernandez has called the meeting in response to public support for Sergeant Friday which has been evident from social media and correspondence received by her office.
“The decision to reassign Sergeant Friday is a purely operational move from two sector sergeants in Penzance sector to a single sergeant,” said Ms Hernandez.
“The chief constable and his senior command team are responsible for making decisions regarding the deployment of officers, not the Police and Crime Commissioner.
“However, I do recognise the impact that changes like this can have on the public’s perception of policing and on how connected they feel to the police and I do understand that many people living in Hayle and St Ives are concerned about these changes.
“So I am calling a public meeting in St Ives next Thursday to allow members of the public and local councillors to voice their concerns directly to me and to senior police officers within Devon and Cornwall Police and for those senior officers to explain the decision.”
In her role as Police and Crime Commissioner Ms Hernandez provides the funding and the strategic direction for the force but is not responsible for operational decision making.
“In general, the funding position has been protected for the next four years with some small reductions in the national government grant,” she said.
“I expect that my police and crime plan, which is currently out to consultation, will focus on the continued importance of local policing although there are always a range of new and emerging priorities that must also be balanced such as the online exploitation of children.
“I am fully committed to improving the links between the police and the community, this will be a core feature in my plan for the next four years and that is why I feel this meeting is important.
“Visible local policing, including the work of the dedicated network of police officers and PCSOs working in neighbourhoods across the two counties, is most definitely a part of that connection.
“I want to work with local communities over the coming months to make improvements locally – recognising that what is right for one location may not work in another.
“I am currently consulting on my policing plan for the next four years – and people can get involved in that consultation through the OPCC website.”

*PLEASE NOTE: The OPCC consultation event planned to take place at Tesco Penzance on 1 September will not now go ahead.
UPDATE: Alison Hernandez , The Devon & Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner has invited me to meet her to discuss a way forward regarding the issues raised by our campaign. I have emailed her to arrange a time.

We need to see more of a Police presence on the streets so it's vital to keep Sergeant Friday in our community!
Stacey F. 29 days ago
It is ridiculous for Hayle and the St Ives area not to be fully patrolled by a police officer, especially during the summer months when thousands of tourists arrive. If any trouble occurs then people will have to wait for a team from Camborne, which would take at least 20 minutes to arrive, in the meantime said trouble could have escalated immensely. The truth is these areas actually need more of a police force presence not less.

Sergeant Friday is an important part of the Community and has done a lot of work with the younger people of the town, it would be such a shame to lose him

Ken W. 28 days ago
Prior to my retirement from the Police I worked as Mikes Inspector. He is the hardest working police officer I have known and is totally dedicated to the community he serves. His knowledge of the area is also second to none and it would be a complete waste of a top officer to remove him from his post.

Sergeant Friday Thank you for all you do for the Younger Generation.
Please see our post from Paradise Park today.
I called 101 and got told to report it to "Action Fraud" after waiting on the phone I gave up and then found out that they would only log the fact! Useless!
So I called Mike's mobile, no answer, Boo! But just ten minutes ago he called me and I told him the story. He is not working this weekend but will arrange for an officer to come and see us about this on Sunday or Monday. Thanks Mike!!

Maria Ellis, Beverley Nielson would you mind collecting up and counting the paper petitions now. I can get them photocopied so that we can send them off to the home office, commissioner etc. We have over 1700 online and people are still signing but I think we can send what we have got so far and still keep collecting, if you know what I mean. I think we all need to be thinking of phase 2 now and the protest on 1st September. Still waiting for venue of Alison Hernandez visit to West Cornwall. We need as many members as possible from this group and beyond to take part in this peaceful protest. Thank you to all who have said yes to taking part or private messaged me but we still need lots more.
Thank you to all that have messaged me already. We could do with all 1700 members to join a protest on 1st September to greet the Devon & Cornwall Police and Crime Commissioner who will be visiting West Cornwall. Location and time to be confirmed. If you can make it, just comment yes or message me. Thanks!
ONCE WE KNOW WHERE THEY ARE IN WEST CORNWALL, I THINK WE NEED TO MAKE OUR PRESENCE FELT. START PAINTING PLACARDS, RALLYING AS MANY MEMBERS AS WE CAN AND LET THE COMMISSIONER KNOW WHAT WE REALLY WANT!
Quote from Alison Hernandez D&C Police and Crime Commissioner:
We are in Redruth on July 29th (Tesco) West Cornwall Sept 1st (Location TBD) Falmouth Sept 6th and Helston Sept 7th. Camborne/Pool/Redruth Sept 7th.
Quote from Linda Taylor Mayor of St Ives:
Linda Taylor: Derek Thomas MP and myself have a meeting with the PCC, , at the last full council meeting I tabled a motion to write to the Chief Constable and the PCC, expressing our real concerns and asking for a full explanation, folliwed by a request to reverse the decision, this was supported unanimously by council, we are awaiting the response.
IT WOULD BE GREAT IF WE COULD GET ALL 1701 MEMBERS TO TURN UP! KEEP SEP 1ST FREE IN YOUR DIARIES!

Thank you for supporting this group. Community policing will be being cut in your area too. We need to show the government that this is not what we the electorate want. Please add weight to this campaign by adding your friends to this group and by sharing and signing this petition
It's good to see that there are now 1701 members in this group and 1678 signatures on the online petition all wanting the same... GOOD COMMUNITY POLICING to PREVENT and MINIMISE CRIME and to keep us all feeling a lot safer! The powers that be have to listen!! KEEP SIGNING, SHARING AND ADDING MEMBERS PLEASE. WE CANNOT RELAX ON THIS ONE! https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petiti…/saving-sergeant-friday…
Here are the minutes for the St Ives Council Meeting that Maria Ellis and myself attended:
RESULT!! George Eustice is supporting our campaign and is going to challenge the decision. He signed one of Maria Ellis' petitions in front of us when we attended a meeting with him this afternoon. So that is Derek Thomas MP for St Ives and George Eustice MP for Hayle who both think that the decision is wrong to remove our community police. George Eustice said that he met Sergeant Friday, a few weeks ago before the news broke, at Hayle Tri-station and was impressed by him. He feels that this is the type of policing needed in the community. It is worth mentioning that Andrew George has also signed the petition.
We now have 1673 online signatures and the ones in the shops and businesses have yet to be collated. Meeting with George Eustice this afternoon. Keep sharing members and adding your friends. Will report back later.
