A PARTIALLY derelict site in Hayle could soon get a new look with plans to build 22 homes plus shops and offices.

At a Hayle Town Council meeting last week, Steven English, from architects Steven English Associates, gave a pre-planning presentation on proposals for the 1.6-acre area of land which currently houses R & J Supplies.

Mr English said: "It has been used as an industrial site as far as records show from very early times.

"The idea of the development is to create a mixture of residential and commercial premises on the site."

Mr English added that the development would create more job opportunities in the area.

Town council members asked Mr English a number of questions including about access and parking.

Councillor Graham Coad said: "Access at both ends is going to be tight out on to what can be a very busy road anyway."

"Overall it doesn't look bad with a few tweaks."

Mr English told the council: "I know you have probably seen schemes before. There have been schemes over there of 70 units.

"We have reduced it from a residential point of view."

The site is between Copper Terrace and Prospect Place and would be split into 13 townhouses, nine apartments, two retail units and office space.

Mr English said it had yet to be decided how many of the properties would be affordable housing. He added that the planning application and an asbestos report would need to be carried out but the company would look to start work on the site in early 2013.
