Ambitious plans for a shopping park at Hayle Rugby Club have been submitted to Cornwall Council.

The scheme which includes nine retail units, three catering units and a £1m contribution towards town centre improvements is being piloted by Walker Developments.

It also includes improvements to Loggans Moor Roundabout and Carwin Rise as well as foot and cycle path improvements in the area which is located next to the West Cornwall Shopping Park.

If the application is given planning consent the rugby club will move to a new £4.5m sports facility at Carwin Rise.

Hayle Rugby Club chairman, John Jago, said the new facility would ensure the long term security of the club.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for the rugby club. The purpose built facility will probably be the best rugby facilities in the county. Importantly for us as a club we currently don’t have enough changing rooms to allow mens, ladies and juniors to play.

“The new facility caters for all so we will have an opportunity to increase our membership and be inclusive to as many people in the community as possible.”

The site rivals another bid already submitted to Cornwall Council for a shopping park at Marsh Lane.

Richard Walker, director of Walker Developments, said their site would provide a natural extension to the existing shopping park.

He added: “It’s a site within the existing built development boundary without any specific site issues relating to ecology, ground conditions or flooding. It provides the best opportunity of spin off community benefits to Hayle in that if our retail scheme gets planning consent then the rugby club get a new club and Hayle get a £1m financial contribution to help improve the town centre.”
